TheoryCoventry City Council’s Swanswell Initiative is a £600m regeneration scheme, the biggest urban renewal programme in the city since the end of World War II. The aim was to create an attractive, vibrant and safe environment with opportunities for all through the formation of a new Learning Quarter, at the heart of which stands a brand new campus for City College.
The new campus provides a diverse range of further education facilities to over 11,000 students specialising in vocational courses. Phase 1 of the scheme, the Advanced Construction and Technology Centre (ACTC), offers state of the art facilities for the teaching of key skills in construction trades, welding, engineering and vehicle repair and spray painting, as well as photography, IT and TV teaching and music recording studios. Phase 2 (CCC2) includes vocational training facilities for science, hair and beauty, drama, dance, art and fashion.
The result is an award-winning College fit for the21st century, where 2,500 students at any one timeare learning essential construction, multi-media andtechnical skills in the best possible environment. The project also demonstrates the advantages ofearly contractor engagement. We met key college staff and visited existing premises several times inorder to fully understand the issues and needs ofteachers, apprentices and students in suchspecialist teaching facilities. This helped us to design and deliver building services that truly support the learning environment. We installed an ICT infrastructure that will supportIT and broadcast teaching as well as general data, and intelligent building controls that reduce the energy required to heat, cool, light and secure the buildings.
These include specialist ventilation solutions foractivities such as paint spraying, and advanced electrical and cooling provision for welding and engineering workshops. We were closely involved in tendering for Phase 2 alongside the main contractor, and won this work largely on the strength of City College’s satisfaction with our solution for Phase 1. Our ability to providea robust Cost Plan, rather than estimating a ‘permetre’ price, helped to provide more certainty forthe client.
"NG Bailey are clearly technically proficient, but, in addition, the team on site and in their offices are approachable, honest and have a very can-do attitude. As a result I am pleased to say that NG Bailey delivered an M&E infrastructure that met the college's requirements and expectations."
