The construction of educational facilities and the educational attainment of future employees are two areas of importance to NG Bailey. Creating opportunities to engage with education schemes and young people provides an opportunity for our people to apply this experiential learning to our school building projects. It also creates inspirational opportunities for young people to learn about engineering which might encourage them into a career in the field in future.
An example of our work in this area is how NG Bailey supported a new Engineering Development Trust initiative called Go4SET which involves getting students, engineers and companies together to deliver exciting projects to stimulate the interest of young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Go4SET links teams of six Year 8/9(England) and S2 (Scotland) pupils with companies and universities to offer a 10 week science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) experience.
In 2010/11 funding enabled Go4SET projects to begin with 2 schools from Brighton, Liverpool and Leeds, and two further schools in Scotland starting at the end of 2011.
To date we have worked with over 20 schools on Engineering Development Trust schemes. In 2010/11 a further 12 schools participated in the NG Bailey sponsored Robot Wars programme, which aims to inspire young people towards considering STEM subjects and to consider a career in engineering.
